HARLEM HALLELUJAH

Harlemin katuelämää kuvatessani panin merkille alueen lukuisat kirkot. Parhaimmiksi hetkiksi New Yorkin -matkallani muodostuivat kolme sunnuntaita, jotka vietin Mother Zion Church -metodistikirkossa. Elähdyttävät gospel-seremoniat eivät aivan käännyttäneet minua metodistiksi, mutta tilaisuuksien jälkeen hengailin seurakuntatiloissa tutustuen Harlemin suurisydämisiin metodisteihin. Erotuksena aiemmista pitkistä kuvausprojekteistani Harlem Hallelujah syntyi kahden kuvauspäivän aikana. Toteutin sen Suomen New Yorkin kulttuuri-instituutin järjestämässä residenssissä kesäkuussa 2016.

HARLEM HALLELUJAH

While photographing street life in Harlem in June 2016 I was amazed at the number of churches this part of Manhattan has. Three Sundays spent at the Mother Zion Church became the highlight of my trip to New York. The gospel ceremonies didn’t convert me into a Methodist, but they inspired me to hang around at the church’s premises and get to know the warm-hearted parishioners. Unlike my previous long-term shooting projects Harlem Hallelujah took only two days to complete. The project was made possible thanks to an artist residency organised by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.
